Diagnostic Lapro-Hysteroscopy

Diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are two separate procedures that are often performed together to diagnose and evaluate conditions of the reproductive system.

When diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are performed together, the procedure is called diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. This combined procedure allows doctors to evaluate both the reproductive organs and the inside of the uterus, providing a more comprehensive evaluation of the reproductive system. It can help diagnose conditions such as infertility, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, and other gynecologic conditions.

How is the Procedure Performed?

Diagnostic Laparoscopy: Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that allows doctors to examine the organs inside the abdomen and pelvis. During the procedure, a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end (called a laparoscope) is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. This allows the doctor to see the reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes, and to check for abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids, endometriosis, and adhesions.

Diagnostic Hysteroscopy: Hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows doctors to examine the inside of the uterus. During the procedure, a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end (called a hysteroscope) is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This allows the doctor to see the lining of the uterus and to check for abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, adhesions, and other structural problems.

Benefits of Diagnostic Lapro-Hysteroscopy

  • Accurate Diagnosis: Diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy provide a more accurate and comprehensive diagnosis than other diagnostic tests, such as ultrasound or MRI. The direct visualization of the reproductive organs allows for a more accurate diagnosis of conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, adhesions, and other structural abnormalities.

  • Minimally Invasive: Diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy are minimally invasive procedures, meaning they require only small incisions or no incisions at all. This results in less pain, scarring, and a shorter recovery time than traditional open surgery.

  • Safe: These procedures are generally considered safe and have a low risk of complications. Patients are usually able to go home the same day or the day after the procedure.

  • Treatment: In some cases, diagnostic laparoscopy and hysteroscopy can also be used to perform minor surgical procedures, such as removing fibroids or treating endometriosis, during the same procedure.

  • Fertility: For women struggling with infertility, these procedures can help identify potential issues that may be affecting fertility. Once identified, treatment options can be discussed with the patient and her healthcare team.
