Uterine Mass

A uterine mass refers to an abnormal growth or tumor that develops in the uterus, which is the organ where a fetus grows during pregnancy. Uterine masses can occur in women of different ages and may be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Treatment for Uterine Mass

The treatment for a uterine mass depends on various factors, including the type of mass, its size, symptoms, and whether it is benign or malignant.

Here are some common treatment options:

  • Observation: In certain cases, particularly with small, asymptomatic uterine masses, a “wait-and-watch” approach may be recommended. Regular monitoring through imaging tests, such as ultrasound or MRI, can be done to track the growth and determine if treatment is necessary.

  • Medications: Medications can be prescribed to manage symptoms associated with uterine masses. For example, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be used to alleviate pain and reduce menstrual bleeding. Hormonal medications, such as hormonal birth control or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, can help shrink fibroids or control hormone-related symptoms.

  • Minimally invasive procedures: Several minimally invasive procedures can be performed to treat uterine masses. These procedures aim to remove or shrink the mass while preserving the uterus. Examples include:

  • Uterine artery embolization: This procedure involves blocking the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink and reducing symptoms.

  • Myomectomy: It is a surgical procedure to remove fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. It can be performed through different techniques, such as hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, or robotic-assisted surgery.

  • Endometrial ablation: This procedure destroys the lining of the uterus to treat conditions such as polyps or adenomyosis. It is not suitable for fibroids that protrude into the uterine cavity.

  • Hysteroscopic resection: It is a minimally invasive procedure to remove polyps or fibroids that are located inside the uterus. A hysteroscope, a thin instrument with a camera, is used for visualization and removal.

  • Hysterectomy: In cases where the uterine mass is large, causing severe symptoms, or if it is malignant (cancerous), a hysterectomy may be recommended. It is a surgical procedure to remove the uterus. Depending on the circumstances, the ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed (oophorectomy and salpingectomy).
